Hotel Van Der Valk Zuidas Vivaldi

The Van der Valk hotel in Amsterdam’s Zuidas district was designed by Wiel Arets Architects, who gave the building a unique, clean, sharp look. The architecture is characterised by a homogeneity to all the façades. The large windows create an open, transparent building that blends in with its surroundings. The hotel also achieved a BREEAM-NL Excellent rating.

The hotel occupies a triangular shaped site, which was chosen in order to elevate the hotel’s main lobby to the fifth level, just higher than the noise-barrier that runs perpendicular to the highway, so that the view from the lobby overlooks the city in all directions, instead of onto the barrier.

Coated solar control glass was selected for the glazed façade. This helps reduce energy costs by lowering the demand for artificial lighting, air conditioning and heating. The glass has a transparent, crystal-like appearance that offers exceptional clarity, as well as low reflection and consistent colour, regardless of the viewing angle. The glass delivers optimum thermal insulation, enhancing the comfort and wellbeing of hotel guests at all times of the year.
