Autumn is traditionally the period for international trade fairs and exhibitions in the European glass sector. On 17 September 2024, Glass for Europe was represented at the Opening Conference of VITRUM 25 in Milan. Our Environment and Climate Manager, Iva Ganev spoke during the event entitled “Building as Green as Glass”, on the panel addressing the impact of environmental sustainability on the glass industry.
Iva emphasised the role of flat glass as a carbon avoidance product in the built environment and therefore its contribution to the EU sustainability objectives. She gave insights into the rationale and impact of the EU sustainability legislation on flat glass, explaining the role played by Glass for Europe in support of members and national partners. She underlined the efforts made by the EU flat glass industry to actively contribute to the decarbonisation objective at EU level, as well as the different industry initiatives in this regard. The European flat glass sector is indeed providing world firsts by testing various pathways to reduce manufacturing emissions. Iva also had the opportunity to exchange with representatives from the Australian and Brazilian glass associations and discuss the extent of sustainability requirements in different regions of the world.
The discussion took place only a few days after the release of the Draghi report on EU competitiveness and right after the publication of an opinion piece by Glass for Europe’s Chairman, Davide Cappellino, President of AGC Glass Europe and America.
