I and all the Glass for Europe team hope that you, your families and friends are safe and in good health. Our thoughts are with those who are being most directly affected. Glass for Europe, like most of you, I suppose, switched to home office nearly two weeks ago. Our activities continue. All the Glass for Europe team can be reached on mobiles phones, which we invite you to prioritise, although our office landline remains operational. In this way, we strive to minimize disruptions or delays to our work.

Europe’s flat glass industry is currently busy putting ‘health and safety above all, while safeguarding the industry’s value-chain’. What it means in practical terms is explained in a public statement by Glass for Europe, which was issue earlier this week. Beneath the immediate actions needed to combat the COVID19 virus, Glass for Europe is also looking one step further to make sure that an economic rebound is possible in the glass and glazing sector once the immediate health crisis over. Enabling such a rebound depends on the solutions designed in the days and weeks to come both in terms of immediate response to the economic crisis in-the-making and in terms of making the new EU Green Deal and the upcoming ‘building renovation wave’ operational.

Once the health crisis behind us, the climate one will still be there to tackle.

Like all Europeans, the European institutions are reshuffling their activities, but designing the measures to make of Europe the first climate-neutral economy by 2050 remains a priority. This is why, this latest issue of the EU Glass focus newsletter, is focused on the operationalisation of the EU Green Deal and the recently issued Glass for Europe publication on ‘2050, flat glass in a climate neutral Europe’.

This global epidemic reminds us harshly that we can and must all learn from each other’s and that collaboration is key to make tangible differences. We have no other option than being successful at embracing new ways of collaborative yet distant working: the flat glass industry will be in dire need of us making together a real difference.
