2022 is the UN International Year of Glass.
|
We had all planned to celebrate the fantastic glass material and all it has offered and continues to offer to our Society. Yet 2022 starts on a very sad note in Europe with the return of war on the continent, its horrors, its tragedies, and its devastations.
|
|
|
|
While celebrations and some discussions may appear futile in this new context, neither life, nor endeavours, the expression of opinion and public debate must stop. Today’s tragic events brought to the fore Europe’s dependence on Russian gas imports thus triggering a debate on whether some inflexions to Europe’s energy policy are needed. Glass for Europe has views to express in this debate and, as you will see below, it is already doing so.

This month, the mandate of Chairman of Glass for Europe came to an end. Philippe Bastien from AGC Glass Europe was Glass for Europe’s Chairman since March 2020 and, as such, has helped navigate the association and the industry during troubled times: the outbreak of COVID and lockdowns in many European countries, the secretariat’s reorganisation, the energy price crisis and, most recently, the war and its consequences on Europe’s industry. Throughout this period, the association maintained its strategic direction and these past weeks, both in the EU press and at Geneva’s opening ceremony of the International Year of Glass, Philippe Bastien strongly advocated for the flat glass sector and its sustainability journey.
