President von der Leyen’s dream team has not yet taken office, but in Brussels it is clear to everyone what will be the main priority of the new European Commission. Vice president Timmermans, who is in charge for the European Green Deal portfolio, will have 100 days to propose a climate law that will enshrine the EU 2050 carbon neutrality commitment, ensure higher ambition for 2030 and update existing climate legislation.

Glass for Europe has already started its communication and advocacy activities on the subject intensifying contacts with confirmed MEPs and building new relationships with the freshly elected. The solid arguments provided by the TNO study have been so far extremely handy to advocate the increase of the window replacement rate, convey the urgency of decarbonising the EU building stock and highlight the energy savings and CO2 emission reduction potential of high-performance glazing. But we expect the upcoming new Green Deal to be more ambitious on CO2 emissions reduction and sustainability issues. The industry will be most likely required to made further efforts and speed up the decarbonisation of its manufacturing processes. Glass for Europe is preparing itself to engage in fruitful discussions with EU legislators so that flat glass specifies are considered in both new and revised legislations. Since flat glass is an essential material to decarbonise the most emitting sectors of the EU economy (building and transport), it is imperative to ensure that the transition to a climate neutral economy do not hamper the competitiveness of European made flat glass products.

Raising awareness about the contribution of energy efficient glazing

As of the release of the TNO study on the evaluation of the impact of high-performance glazing on energy consumption and CO2 savings, Glass for Europe has been active to disseminate the results in different fora a across Europe. The study is also being used by National Associations and companies to advocate for more targeted measures to support the renovation of outdated windows and glazing. Communication materials are now available in French, Dutch and Spanish and are helping raising awareness among national governments about the contribution of energy efficient glazing to reach their energy and climate objectives.
