On 22 April, in response to the recent surge in energy prices, the European Commission adopted the AccelerateEU Communication. Glass for Europe welcomes the strong emphasis placed on the critical role of energy efficiency in buildings as a key lever to address current economic and energy challenges.
The Communication follows a request from EU heads of government for concrete measures to mitigate the economic consequences of the conflict in the Middle East. It sets out a comprehensive “toolbox to bring immediate relief to European households and industries while putting Europe on a steady pathway to energy independence”.
Among both short-term actions and structural measures with longer-term impact, the European Commission highlights energy efficiency as a central pillar. In particular, Member States are encouraged to implement targeted measures capable of delivering rapid results, including the replacement of inefficient windows.
The Commission further outlines a set of building-specific measures, including:
- Provide up to 50% subsidies and zero-interest loans (up to EUR 50,000) for building renovations, including insulation,
- Introduce targeted fiscal incentives and/or financial support, including social leasing for vulnerable households, to rapidly roll out easy-to-install clean and efficient technologies, such as high-performance windows,
- Integrated plan combining behavioural measures, quick-payback investments and long-term renovation, targeting 20% energy savings over two years.
Member States must act without delay to support citizens facing persistently high energy costs. Glass for Europe is ready to help turn these commitments into concrete results.
